Among the Guna, the nuchu is far more than a carved figure.
Present in the home, it belongs to a world in which the visible and invisible realms are intimately connected.
These small anthropomorphic wooden figures are traditionally regarded as protectors and as auxiliaries in healing practices.
Their power is closely connected to the tree from which they are carved. Balsa, particularly light and soft, holds a special place in Guna cosmology and is associated with healing practices.
Nuchus are not considered active from the moment they are created.
The shaman “awakens” or activates them through ritual chants and fumigation.
They then become auxiliaries, able to advise the shaman, help identify the origin of illness and participate in healing practices, both for diseases and for everyday ailments.
The nuchus presented here come from Guna communities living on the edge of the Darién jungle in Panama.
Made especially for Ethic & Tropic, they have never been consecrated or used in a ritual. They are sculptures that bear witness to an ancestral artistic and cosmological tradition.
Through their apparent simplicity, they embody a unique relationship between the forest, matter, spirit and protection.
