The Kuna nuchu is present in all Kuna homes. It is a protector of the home and is also used for healing rituals.
The nuchus on display are made from balsa wood, a tree renowned for its supernatural properties.
These nuchus come from the Kuna tribe on the edge of the Darien jungle.
They were made for me, they are not sacred and have never been used.
They are found in Kuna homes, gathered together in a wooden box or basin, and there can be as many as 30 or more. They are inanimate.
The shaman activates them (or wakes them up) with songs and smoke. The nuchus are then able to give advice and become the shaman's helpers in curing illnesses and everyday ailments.
