The Kuna nuchu is found in every Kuna home. It protects the house and is also used for healing rituals.
The nuchus on display are made from balsa wood, a tree renowned for its supernatural properties.
These nuchus come from the Kuna tribe, on the edge of the Darien jungle.
They were made for me, are not sacred and have never been used.
They are found in Kuna homes, gathered together in a wooden box or bowl, and there can be as many as 30 or more. They are inanimate.
The shaman activates (or awakens) them by singing and smoking. The nuchus can then give advice and help the shaman to cure illnesses and everyday ailments.
This sculpture has been treated to eliminate all larvae and insects.
